Agra
Agra is famous as being
home to one of the seven wonders of the world-the Taj Mahal.
The architectural splendour of the mausoleums, the fort and the
palaces is a vivid reminder of the capital in the 16th and early
17th centuries. While its significance as a political centre
ended with the transfer of the capital to Delhi in 1634 by Shah
Jahan, its architectural wealth has secured its place on the
international map. A pleasant town with comparatively slow pace,
Agra is known for its superb inlay work on marble and soapstone
by craftsman who are descendant of those who worked under the
Mughals. The city is also famous for its carpets, gold thread
embroidery and leather shoes.

Bharatpur
A
paradise for the avian world, and the pilgrimage for the bird lovers, it
was known as the best duck shooting resort in the British empire. It was
declared a reserve for birds in 1956 and later upgraded to National Park.
UNESCO has listed it as a world heritage site. The geographical location
is ideal as it is on the main North-South avian route of India. Although
small in size, 29 sq km. Only, it boasts to house more than 375 species
of beautiful birds, and more than 132 of them breed inside the Keoladeo
Ghana National Park and nearly every year new ones are added to the list.
The sanctuary not only attracts birds from India but also from places like
Europe, Siberia, China and Tibet. Before monsoons hundreds of these exotic
birds roost and nest building activities start on the babool and kadam
trees of the park. Water coming through the Ajan Bandh starts filling the
various ponds and lakes of the Park.

Chennai
Madras, now called Chennai, the first city of Tamil Nadu, is comparatively a
new city. The erstwhile villages of Mylapore, Triplicane, Ezhambur (Egmore),
etc., all now a part of Chennai, have a recorded historical past centuries older
than Chennai. Chennai, the present gateway to the South of India, is, however,
only about 350 years old. Chennai is ever growing, changing and pulsating with
new activities. The city of today, one of the great metropolitan cities of the
world, and the fourth largest city in India, grew from the Fort that Francis
Day and his superior Andrew Cogan of East India Company built on a narrow strip
of no-man's land, that Beri Thimanna negotiated with the local governor of the
Vijayangar Empire. The approximately 5-square kilometer sand strip Day was granted
has now grown into a city of about 170 sq.kms. with a population of about 6 million.

Cochin
A
leisurely walk through the city is the best way to discover historic Fort
Kochi. An obscure fishing village that became the first European township
in India, Kochi has an eventful and colourful history. Its reputation as
a seafaring commercial town was such that Nicolas Conti, an Italian traveller
of the Middle Ages remarked: If China is where you make your money, then
Kochi surely is the place to spend it. The town was developed by the Portuguese,
the Dutch and later the British. The result of these cultural influences
are seen in the many examples of Indo European architecture that still
exist here.

Delhi
One
of the most fascinating aspects of Delhi is the "visibility" of
its historic past. Were it not for the demands of urbanization, large portions
of the city could well be earmarked as archaeological parks. This is because
the rulers of successive dynasties between the 13th and the 17th centuries
established seven cities in different parts of Delhi. A chronological review
of these cities fortunately also serves as a suitable itinerary for tourists
and highlights the important monuments amongst the 1300 officially listed.
