Periyar
Set high in the ranges of
the Western Ghats, in Kerala, is the Periyar National Park and
Tiger Reserve. The park has a picturesque lake at the heart of
the sanctuary. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this
reservoir meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing
a perennial source of water for the local wildlife. Herds of
elephant and sambar, gaur and wild pigs wander down to the lakeside
and can be observed from the launches that cruise the lake. In
March and April, the driest period here, animals spend a lot
of time near the lake and the elephants can be seen bathing and
swimming in the reservoir. A glimpse may be had even of the tiger
during this season, as it comes to the water. Periyar also harbours
the leopard, wild dog, barking deer and mouse deer. On the rocky
outcrops along the lake, monitor lizards can be seen basking
in the sun. Visitors who trek into the Park often see a python
and sometimes even a king cobra.

Trivandrum
The
capital of the state of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram or the City of the
Sacred Snake, is built over seven hills. Named after Anantha, the thousand
- headed serpent of Hindu mythology, the city once formed a part of
the Travancore kingdom, its capital at Padmanabhapuram, now a part
of Tamil Nadu. Thiruvananthapuram is, decidedly, one of the clean and
well-planned cities of the country. The city's scenic appeal, its enchanting
beaches, and overwhelming greenery only add to its uniqueness. It embodies
the magical feel of Kerala, as a whole, and lends terrific insight
into the culture of the state. The red-tiled roofs, the never-ending
stretches of palm trees, the maze of narrow, winding streets and above
all, the sea, make for a fascinating mixture. There is an element of
understated and effortless elegance about the city, which leaves a
lasting impression on the visitor.

Varanasi
Varanasi,
or Benaras, is one of the oldest living cities in the world.
Varanasi's prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrivalled.
Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled
by the legend and sanctity of Banaras, once wrote: "Benaras is older than history,
older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old
as all of them put together". One of the earliest descriptions
of Varanasi is found in the Buddhist scriptures as also in
the epic, 'Mahabharat'. According to the scriptures, the
Varuna and Assi rivers originated from the body of the primordial
person at the beginning of time itself. The track of land
lying between them is believed to be the holiest of all pilgrimages.
The holy land between these two rivers is 'Varanasi'. The
city is, also known as Kashi (Derived from the root 'Kas'
- to shine) is called the city of spiritual light.
