Jaipur
Jaipur is as remarkable for its
marvellous architecture and town planning as it is for the lively
spirit of the people who inhabit it. The city presents a unique synthesis
of culture that has to be experienced in order to be appreciated.
With its origin buried deep into the pages of history, the city still
has a magical old world charm; an aroma of chivalry and romance is
evident, despite having evolved into a city that is the hub of modern
commercial activity in the region. Tell- tale signs of the glorious
past and regal splendour of the city lie strewn across with gay abandon.
The colourful and intricately carved monuments are adequately matched
by the lively spirit of fanfare, festivity and celebration. Even today,
one can find weather beaten faces with huge coloufrul trurbans, savage
moustaches and lips that spontaneously a crease into a heart warming
smile.

Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer evokes a vivid picture of sheer magic and brilliance of
the desert. Founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D., the remote location
of Jaisalmer kept it almost untouched by outside influences, even
during the days of the Raj. Jaisalmer was the last to sign the Instrument
of Agreement with the British.
Very few cities can boast of the magnificence that surrounds Jaisalmer.
There is a fort that seems to rise out of a desert haze, its yellow
sandstone walls and bastions taking on a golden hue in the afternoon
sun, which is why it is aptly called Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort.

Jodhpur
Once the capital of the former princely state of Marwar, is now the
second largest city of Rajasthan.
Flanked on its western side by the Meherangarh fort and on the eastern
side by the stately sandstone palace of Umaid Bhawan. The monuments,
temples and gardens of Jodhpur depict a multi-faceted grandeur.
Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, Jodhpur gradually grew around the towering
Meharangarh fort. A flourishing trading center in the 16th century,
Jodhpur is still one of the leading centers of wool, cattle, camels,
salt and agricultural crops. It boasts of some very fine reminders
of its glorious past - palaces, temples and other elegant monuments
of architectural and historical value.

Udaipur
Is
one of the most romantic cities in Rajasthan, which is also known
as the city of lakes. The marble palaces, most famous of them being
the Lake Palace, beautifully laid out gardens and the lakes make Udaipur
look almost like a mirage in the desert.
The founder of Udaipur, Maharana Udai Singh, was overcome by the misfortunes
that his old capital of Chittorgarh had to face due to repeated attacks
by the Mughal armies. On the advice of a holy man, Udai Singh shifted
his capital to the banks of Lake Pichola- the city was named Udaipur
after him.

Khajuraho
Khajuraho derives its name from the Khajur tree (the date palm tree)
which abound a plenty in the region. The construction of these temples
began in the reign of King Yasovarman. Eighty five of these temples
were built, of which around twenty two survive today. These temples
are divided into three geographical blocks: the western, eastern and
the southern. The western block is the biggest and the richest in
artistry. The frank depiction of uninhibited sex does hint towards
a liberated society and times where people believed in dealing openly
with all aspects of life. The graphic and realistic illustrated scenes
of love making are elaborated in the Tantric texts. However, the depiction
of sex forms only a small fraction of the total carving at Khajuraho.
Though the southern and the eastern blocks are quite well made in
their own right, they do not match up with the magnificence of the
western block.
